Willows Dip Book Five
My characters' special holiday
For Celia and Charles Guernsey is the first holiday they have together. She went in her youth, as I did myself; I based her character loosely on me, an author suffering from M.E/C.F.S, divorced mother of adult children. It seemed fitting I should give her my teenage holiday too. When Charles, a friend to whom she'd grown close, suggested a short break in Guernsey, knowing how she'd always longed to go back, it was an opportunity she couldn't refuse.

Return to Guernsey
A Holiday Memoir
My special holiday
I'd always wanted to go back to Guernsey, even as I got on the boat to leave in 1974 when I was 19 - I didn't even want to leave! I didn't want to go home and leave that beautiful place. When I got divorced aged 40 I planned to take my sons there on holiday but got ill with M.E/C.F.S so it never happened. I'd given up on any hope of ever seeing the sea again let alone in Guernsey then my son said, 'What about for your 70th?' It all went from there.

This covers my life from age four when I moved with my parents from my granddad's two bedroomed terraced house in Stoke-on-Trent to a brand new bungalow on the edge of the Staffordshire moorlands in 1959. I had an idyllic childhood playing in the woods, until my mum got breast cancer when I was 12. Guernsey came quite by chance when I was 19 through a friend's younger brother who went to the Methodist youth club and told her they had some places left on a trip to Guernsey and would she and any of her friends like to go? We did and I fell in love with that wonderful island as soon as I stepped off the boat, and it continued to weave its magic spell as the week progressed.
